PersonalMy personal work deals with the subjective experience of time – how do we experience time, and how does this translate to our sense of self? How does a sense of personal history and self-narrative interact with the testimony, the memory and forgetting, of ourselves and our networks? And how much of that experience of time can be transmitted between people? Photography is a good medium for this, but the gaps between the images, the projects, and the stories are as important as the images themselves. Is it possible to depict the gaps? These are the questions I explore with my work. Years Years is a very personal exploration of the passage of time in my life – it is a series of annual photobooks examining the artistic life through my eyes. Each individual photobook exists somewhere between the space of photodiary and sketchbook, and the Years in sum amount to a retrospective in real-time. This project will continue until my death. (photos from 2011 until present)
Recent Memories Recent Memories was a pop-up show in 2018 of selected personal photographs from 2015-2017.
Family Album Family Album was my first project – exploring the dynamics of immigration and assimilation, family history and memory, and the economic development of California in the second half of the 20th Century, I depicted my family through portraits of the stores they owned in California’s Central Valley. All photographs date from January 2013.
